In order to promote global peace and security by international collaboration in education, research, and culture, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established in 1945 as a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN). It includes 193 member nations and 11 associate members, as well as partners in the non-governmental, intergovernmental, and commercial sectors. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. A worldwide organisation with headquarters in the World Heritage Centre in Paris, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has 53 regional field offices and 199 national commissions that help it carry out its global purpose.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established in 1945 as the successor organisation to the League of Nations' International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation. The agency's objectives, governance structure, and operational framework are all established under the agency's constitution. The original goal of the United Countries Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which was influenced by the Second World War, is to promote peace, sustainable development, and human rights by promoting cooperation and discussion among nations. A total of five main programme areas are used to achieve this goal: education; natural sciences; social/human sciences; culture; communication/information; and communication/information technology. UNESCO supports programmes that aim to enhance literacy, offer technical training and education, advance research, safeguard independent media and press freedom, preserve regional and cultural heritage, and promote cultural diversity, to name a few objectives.

Its activities have expanded over the years as a focal point for world culture and science; for example, it aids in the translation and dissemination of world literature, assists in the establishment and protection of World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural significance, works to close the global digital divide, and works to build inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. UNESCO has established a number of initiatives and worldwide movements, such as Education for All, to promote the advancement of its fundamental goals, including the promotion of gender equality.

The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which meets biannually to establish the agency's programmes and budget, governs the organisation. It also elects members of the Executive Board, which oversees the organization's operations, and selects the Director-General, who serves as the organization's top administrator every four years. It is a member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, which is an international alliance of governments, corporations, non-governmental organisations, and other organisations dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
