The Institution of Belgrade is a public research university in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. It is the oldest and biggest university in Serbia, as well as the country's most prestigious.
The University of Belgrade was established in 1808 as the Belgrade Higher School in revolutionary Serbia, and by 1838 it had united with the Kragujevac-based departments to form an unified institution. Around 97,700 students are enrolled at the University, and there are approximately 4,800 members of the academic staff. This university has educated more than 378,000 bachelors and about 25,100 magisters, 29,000 specialists and 14,670 physicians since it was founded in 1850. The University is made up of 31 faculties, 12 research institutions, a university library, and nine university centres, all of which are located around the city. The faculties are divided into four groups: social sciences and humanities; medical sciences; natural sciences and mathematics; and technical sciences. The social sciences and humanities are divided into two groups: social sciences and humanities and medical sciences.
According to the most current (2018) worldwide rating of the respected Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), the University of Belgrade is ranked between 401st and 500th in the world. In 2014, it was rated 151-200, with the highest rankings in the fields of mathematics and physics.
