UCD (formerly known as the University of California, Davis) is a public land-grant research university in Davis, California, located in the city's downtown core. It is the northernmost of the University of California system's 10 campuses and is designated as a Public Ivy. University of California at Davis was established in 1905 as an agricultural branch of the system, and it was designated as the university's seventh campus when it became such in 1959.
Doctoral universities with a high level of research activity are classed as "R1" institutions. Members of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Law Institute, and the National Academy of Engineering make up the UC Davis faculty. There are also 23 members on the National Academy of Sciences' faculty, 30 members on the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' faculty, 17 members on the American Law Institute, 14 members on the Institute of Medicine's faculty, and 14 members on the National Academies' faculty. Two Nobel Prizes, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, three Pulitzer Prizes, three MacArthur Fellowships, and a National Medal of Science are among the major distinctions the university staff, alumni, and researchers have received.
With roots as a primarily agricultural campus, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) has grown over the past century to include graduate and professional programmes in medicine (which includes the UC Davis Medical Center), law (which includes the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center), education, nursing, and business management, in addition to the 90 research programmes offered by the University of California, Davis Graduate Studies programme. It is the biggest veterinary school in the United States, and it has been rated top in the world for five consecutive years (2015–19), according to the World Veterinary Medical Association. Additionally, the Division of Continuing and Professional Education at the University of California, Davis provides certificate and course options to adult learners, including online programmes, as well as to non-traditional learners.
Athletes from the University of California, Davis play in NCAA Division I as members of the Big West Conference, as well as the Big Sky Conference (football only) and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Aggies compete mostly in football, and are members of the Big West Conference.
