The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a public land-grant research university located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. In addition to being a part of the University of California system, it is devoted solely to the study of health and medicine. In medical and biological research and education, it is regarded as a prominent hub.

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) was established in 1864 as Toland Medical College, and in 1873 it became associated with the University of California, becoming the Medical Department. This same year, it founded the California College of Pharmacy, and the next year, it built a dental school. In addition to Berkeley, it also had facilities in San Francisco and Los Angeles. UC Davis was established in 1964 as a campus of the University of California system, overseen by a chancellor, and the institution was given its present name the following year. With a long history of being located in Parnassus Heights and various places across the city, it established a second main campus in Mission Bay, which was then under construction at the time of development.

A leading medical and life sciences university in the world, UCSF is widely regarded as one of the world's best. US News & World Report ranks the University of California at San Francisco's medical school second nationally for clinical training, its pharmacy school second nationally for clinical training, and several of its nursing schools second nationally or higher. According to the National Institutes of Health, UCSF receives the ninth highest amount of research money, and its research output is consistently listed in the world's top 10 in a wide range of scientific specialties. The University of California, San Francisco's research output is rated in the top 20 in the world across all subjects, despite the fact that it is solely focused on health sciences. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, UCSF is the ninth best healthcare provider in the country, and it is first in neurology and neurosciences.

UCSF is the second-largest public employer in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a total workforce of 25,398 people. Patients and residents have been treated and educated at the San Francisco General Hospital since 1873, and the San Francisco VA Medical Center has been in operation for more than 50 years.
