The University of Johannesburg (abbreviated as UJ) is a public institution of higher learning that may be found in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR), and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University came together to form the University of Johannesburg on January 1, 2005. This came about as a result of a merger that took place between these three educational institutions. RAU was already home to the Daveyton and Soweto campuses of the formerly known as Vista University before the merger. As a consequence of the merger that created Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), former students and faculty often refer to the institution simply as RAU. Professor Tshilidzi Marwala currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg. He was sworn into office on January 1, 2018. Prof. Ihron Lester Rensburg served as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg from 2005 till 2017.
Out of the 26 public universities that make up South Africa's system of higher education, the recently established institution is one of the biggest comprehensive contact institutions in the country. The University of Johannesburg has a total student body of over 50,000, with over 3,000 students coming from a total of 80 different countries.
UJ is comprised of four campuses, all of which may be found within the metropolitan region of the City of Johannesburg: the Auckland Park Kingsway campus, the Auckland Park Bunting Road campus, the Doornfontein campus, and the Soweto campus.
The Senate is the entity at the university that is responsible for academic concerns, and the majority of its members are full professors as well as heads of departments. According to the legislation, it is the responsibility of the Senate to answer to the Council of the university for all of the teaching, learning, research, and academic activities of the institution, as well as for any additional tasks that have been delegated or assigned to it by the Council.
About 250 people make up the present membership of the University of Johannesburg Senate, which is presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Tshilidzi Marwala. The Registrar serves as the Senate's Secretarial Officer at the UJ. The Department of Higher Education and Training is the largest stakeholder in the University of Johannesburg, and Minister Blade Ndzimande is now in charge of the department.
