Since 1946, the public research university located in Mainz, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany, has been given the name Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (German: Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz). It is one of the biggest universities in Germany, with over 32,000 students (2018) spread throughout nearly 100 schools and clinics. The university underwent a complete restructuring, and as of the first of the year 2005, it was divided up into eleven different colleges of study.
The university is a member of the German U15, which is a consortium of fifteen major research-intensive and premier medical institutions in Germany. One of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country of Germany is Johannes Gutenberg University.
The institution is a participant in the information technology cluster that spans the Rhine, Main, and Neckar rivers. The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the Goethe University Frankfurt, and the Technische Universitat Darmstadt are the three universities that comprise the Rhine-Main-Universities (RMU).
