The University of Portsmouth (formerly known as Portsmouth Polytechnic) is a public research university in the English city of Portsmouth, which is located in the county of Hampshire.[1] The university was rated 88th out of 132 institutions in the Good University Guide 2022, which was produced by The Times and Sunday Times. As a result, it is one of just four institutions in the South-East to have received a Gold rating from the Government Teaching Excellence Framework.[2]

Among those who have graduated from Portsmouth include Tim Peake, Grayson Perry, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, Sir John Armitt, Baroness Diana Maddock, and HSBC CEO John Flint. His alumni are located all over the globe, holding senior and executive positions in finance, politics, and civil engineering, to name a few areas of specialisation. Alessandro Melis, curator of the Italian Pavilion at the XVII Venice Biennale, and astronomer and Eddington Medal recipient Prof Claudia Maraston are both members of the University's faculty of arts and sciences.[3]

The University of the Channel Islands is a member of the University Alliance and the Channel Islands Universities Consortium, among other organisations. There are a variety of subjects available at the university, including Pharmacology, International Relations, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Paleontology, Criminal Justice, and Criminal Justice Administration.

History[edit]

When the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Art was founded in 1870, it was financed entirely by subscription, and this was the beginning of the University's history. Technical education (including science-based courses) subsequently fell under the jurisdiction of the municipal government, which established the Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute in 1894 to carry out this role on its own dime. Portsmouth, on the other hand, needed a permanent, purpose-built facility for technical education, and as a result, Portsmouth Municipal College was established on a location behind the city's Guildhall. A public library and the College of Art were housed in the same building as the new Portsmouth Municipal College, which replaced the old Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute (although many of its employees were transferred to the new college). The building also housed the College of Art, the Portsmouth Day Training College for teachers, and the Portsmouth Public Library. The old college structure, now known as Park Building, is still in use by the University of Portsmouth and serves as a teaching and research facility.[4]

According to early documents from the Student Union journal The Galleon, two Student Unions were formed in 1911, one for male students and one for female students.

Because of a decrease in the need for engineering skills following World War II, the institution broadened its curriculum from 1945 to 1960, including arts and humanities courses as well as science and mathematics. Portsmouth College of Technology was established in 1953 when the institution's name was changed. After achieving polytechnic status in 1969, the institution was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic, and by the late 1980s, it had grown to become one of the biggest polytechnics in the United Kingdom. The University of Portsmouth was officially established on July 7, 1992, with a ceremony held in the Portsmouth Guildhall to commemorate the occasion. Under the provisions of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, it would be able to authenticate its own degrees as a newly established university. Pompey Football Club announced on Friday, May 4, 2018, that the University of Portsmouth would serve as the club's primary jersey sponsor for the 2018–19, 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons.
