The Institution of South Carolina (also known as the University of South Carolina, U of SC, South Carolina, SC, or simply Carolina) is a public research university in Columbia, South Carolina, that was founded in 1836. It includes seven satellite campuses around the state, and its main campus, which spans more than 359 acres (145 hectares) in downtown Columbia, not far from the South Carolina State House, is the largest in the US in terms of land area. It also includes the world's greatest collection of Robert Burns and Scottish literary materials outside of Scotland, as well as the world's largest collection of Ernest Hemingway manuscripts and books.
Columbia University, originally known as South Carolina College, is the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina System. It offers more than 350 programmes of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from 14 degree-granting colleges and schools, making it the state's most comprehensive educational institution. As of autumn 2019, the institution has a total enrollment of roughly 52,000 students, with more than 35,000 enrolled on the main Columbia campus, making it the biggest university in South Carolina by enrollment. The University of Southern California also has several thousand potential students enrolled in feeder programmes at nearby technical institutions. Business, engineering, law, medicine, pharmacy, and social work are some of the professional schools available on the Columbia campus.
