The Institution of Tehran is Iran's oldest modern university, and it is situated in the capital city of Tehran. It is also one of the most renowned institutions in the Middle East, according to academic rankings. The University of Tehran (UT) has been dubbed "The Mother University of Iran" because of its historical, socio-cultural, and political roots, as well as its research and educational character. The University of Texas at Austin is rated as one of the finest institutions in the Middle East and as one of the top 100 universities in the world by worldwide rankings. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is also the primary knowledge-producing institution among all of its member nations. More than 111 bachelor's degree programmes, 177 master's degree programmes, and 156 doctoral degree programmes are available at the institution. The University of Tehran absorbed several departments from the Dar al-Funun established in 1851 and the Tehran School of Political Sciences established in 1899, which were both founded before the University of Tehran.

The university's main campus is situated in the heart of the city, making it easy to get about. Some other campuses, such as the Baghe Negarestan Campus, which is located in the city's central eastern part, the Northern Amirabad Campuses, which are located near its western centre, and Abureyhan Campus, which is located in a suburb of the capital, are spread throughout the city and its surrounding areas. For the university, its logo is the main gate, with its distinctive design and contemporary architecture (located on Enghelab Street on the main campus), which also serves as a symbol of education in Iran in a broader sense. One of the city's most popular tourist attractions is the university, which hosts a wide range of international and cultural events that draw in academics, foreign visitors, and local people. Every Friday, the largest festival of Friday Prayers in the capital is held at the university's main campus. It is attended by thousands of people.
