UTD, often known as The Institution of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), is a public research university in Richardson, Texas, United States. In addition, it is the biggest public university in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the northernmost college in the University of Texas system. In 1961, Texas Instruments established it as a private research arm to further the company's research and development.

Since its founding, the young institution has been distinguished by quick increase in research output as well as competitive undergraduate admissions procedures, all of which have contributed to its rapid expansion. The Carnegie Foundation rated the institution as a doctoral research university with "Highest Research Activity" less than 47 years after it was established, making it the fastest-growing university in Texas. The university has been associated with four Nobel Prizes and has members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering on its faculty. Some of the university's most notable research projects have been in the fields of space science, bioengineering, cybersecurity, nanotechnology, and behavioural and brain sciences, among other areas of study. University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) provides more than 140 academic programmes throughout its eight colleges, as well as more than 50 research institutes and centres.

There are 14 intercollegiate teams represented by the institution, including a nationally known co-ed varsity Esports programme. The college competes in the American Southwest Conference as a Division III athletics programme. Additionally, the institution recruits from all around the globe for its Top 4 college chess team, which is ranked in the world.

While the main campus is legally under the authority of the city of Richardson, one-third of it is located inside the limits of Dallas County, according to the university. Additionally, the University of Texas at Dallas has several locations in downtown Dallas, including the Crow Museum of Asian Art in the Arts District as well as several buildings in the Medical District next to UT Southwestern, including the Center for BrainHealth and the Callier Center for Communication Disorders.
