Uttar Pradesh is a state in northern India that borders the Punjab. It is the most populous state in India, as well as the most populous country subdivision in the world, with a population of more than 200 million people. It was established on April 1, 1937, as the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh under British control, and was renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950, earning it the abbreviation UP. It is the most population place in India. State of Uttar Pradesh is split into 18 divisions and 75 districts, with Lucknow acting as the state capital and Allahabad functioning as the judicial capital of the country. On November 9, 2000, a new state was created from the state's Himalayan hill area, which is now known as Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand). The Ganges and the Yamuna, the two most important rivers in the state, merge at the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad and flow eastward as the Ganges River. The Gomti and the Saryu are two more notable rivers. The amount of forest cover in the state accounts for 6.1 percent of the state's total land area. Cultivable land accounts for 82 percent of total geographical area, with net area planted accounting for 68.5 percent of cultivable land.
