Van Alpert (born August 6, 1986), is an American filmmaker, music video director, artist and fashion designer. He has directed music videos for some of the world's most prominent artists from Post Malone to Machine Gun Kelly.
Alpert’s feature film directorial debut “Skategoat,” was released in 2024. Other notable works include Bolt Driver (2021), Twitch, and Interpol: Something Changed (2022).
Alpert is also an artist, having exhibited at solo shows and galleries in New York, Miami, Seattle, and Los Angeles.
Alpert was born on August 6, 1986, in the United States. During Alpert's childhood, Alpert's family moved around a lot while his father Marc Alpert worked in Brazil. His family moved to Key Biscayne Florida after Hurricane Andrew in August 1992.
At 17, Alpert moved to New York City to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, where he worked and directed several student films.
In 2007, Alpert moved to Cuba to study filmmaking at EICTV (Escuela de Cine y Television). At EICTV, he worked as an assistant director on the documentary “Havana Surf.” For 1 year Alpert went to Pasadena Art Center on a scholarship for Advertising at the night school program.
As a teenager, Alpert practiced graffiti around Miami and developed a painting style. At 19, he was one of the youngest servers at Nobu in New York City.
In 2009, Alpert moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in filmmaking. He joined the Art Department Local 44 for commercials. With a background in building sets and props, Alpert developed a distinctive style that mixed street culture with his signature visual realism.
In 2021, Alpert released his feature film directorial debut "Skategoat." The film was developed over ten years, documenting the story of Venice Beach skater Leandre Sanders.[1][2]
Alpert is known for writing and directing the short film “Twitch,” featuring the story of a young man battling the confines of Tourette’s syndrome as he fearlessly embarks on his quest as a musician. The film was nominated for a Webby Award. He also wrote, produced, directed, and edited the feature film Bolt Driver (2021) in collaboration with Nick Corirossi.[3]
In addition to films, Alpert has also directed several music videos. He wrote, edited, and directed Post Malone’s first breakthrough music video, “White Iverson,” which has over 1.5 billion views.
In 2019 Alpert directed music videos for The Local Natives starring Kate Mara.
In 2020 Alpert wrote and directed Machine Gun Kelly's "My Ex's Best Friend" video with over 150 million views.[3] The video won the MTV VMA Award.
In 2021, Alpert directed twelve Music Videos and a short film for Grace Gaustad's "BLKBX" Album.
As an artist, Alpert sold his first art show at Miami Art Basel in 2013. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries and solo shows including New York, Miami, LA, and Seattle.
He has a younger brother Aaron and an older sister Rachel from his mother Ingrid Schouten and his father Marc Alpert. Alpert also has 3 older brothers Ari, Brett, and Greg. His older brother Ari Alpert is a shoe designer and manufacturer and his mother was a model from the Netherlands, Miss Holland 1981.[4] Alpert’s aunt is Dutch comedian, actress, and recording artist Tineke Schouten.
