William Rowntree (1768- October 14 1849)[1] [2] was a British historian and politician. Rowntree specialized in study of the Jewish people.[3] Rowntree's studies have been historically praised for their comprehensive nature.[4] However, they have also been accused of implied antisemitism in the text.[5]
Rowntree was born in 1768 to an upper class household in Kensington, London, who had made their wealth from banking.[6] Rowntree was a clerk to the Gateshead Poor Law Union, and had previously served on the Board of Guardians and the town council.[7] Rowntree also held ownership of a bank in Scarborough at this time.[8] Rowntree had been engaged in legal litigation over property in Scarborough shortly before his death.[9]
