Yang Zhijun (Simplified Chinese characters: 杨志军; Traditional Chinese characters:楊志軍; born May 1955) is a contemporary Chinese author and a native of Xining, Qinghai.
Yang was born in Xining, Qinghai Province, in May 1955.
He first rose to prominence in 1987, when his debut novel, The Collapse Around the Lake (环湖崩溃), won China's Contemporary Literature Award. He would follow up on this success the following year, by winning China's National Literary Newcomer Award for his Novel, The Sea Retreats Yesterday (海昨天退去). He was also nominated for the prestigious Mao Dun Literature Prize>.
Yang has been acclaimed for telling the story of the Tibetan highlands and its legendary Mastiff. His 2005 novel, Tibetan Mastiff, was a national bestseller, and sparked China's fascination with Tibetan culture. It would later be adapted into the animated film The Tibetan Dog|The Tibetan Dog, first screened at France's Annecy International Animation Film Festival|Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2011. Yang's first English translated title, Mastiffs of the Plateau, translated by Jiang Lin was published in 2018.
He has also written a collection of children's novels, including his highly successful The Last Tibetan Mastiff King (最后的藏獒王) series. In 2021, his novel, The Chidren of Bayan Har Mountain (巴彦哈拉山的孩子) won the National Award for Outstanding Children's
Literature.
