Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College came together to become what is now known as the University of Yonsei in January of 1957. This was the fruit of a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership between the institutions that had its beginnings in the 1920s. These establishments were the pioneers in their fields on the Korean peninsula. When it originally opened its doors in March 1915 as Chosun Christian College, Yonhi College was one of the first modern institutions to be established. Gwanghyewon, the country's first modern medical institution, was established in April of 1885, which is when Severance got its start. The initial syllables of the names of Yonsei's two parent institutions, Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College, were used to create the name "Yonsei" as a form of homage. The name "Yonsei" is created from these syllables.
