Extrinsic motivation

Extrinsic motivation refers to external influences which drive behaviour.

These extrinsic motivators involve either a "carrot" or "stick":

• Carrot - reward - Behaviour is performed to gain an external reward such as money or recognition
• Stick - punishment - Behaviour is performed to avoid an external punishment such as a fine or criticism

Intrinsic motivation is generally more powerful and desirable than extrinsic motivation, but it depends on the situation.
