Information and Communication Technology (ICT Engineering)

From Wikiversity - Reading time: 3 min

Information and Communication Technology is the Engineering Branch that recently came into existence with a mission to provide a wider perspective on the nature of technology, its use and application to the living world. Engineering is not only about the experimentation and learning. It is about the impact it has on the society. Information and Communication Technology has been the branch of Engineering that humans have used all through the evolution process for being the most advanced creature on the Earth. Moreover developing countries try to improve their lives and gain a competitive edge using Information and Communication.

ICT | The Thought

Information and Communication Technology, isn't just incorporation of Information Technology and Communication Technology into one. Instead it has evolved into something quite different, it has brought near the two to supplement the needs of other.

All these years passed by and the human instinct made him to believe and scramble the engineering into different branches. If there is no information what would be need of communication and on other side if there is no communication what is the use of having even a small unit of information. The real development lies in the synchronization between the two. If an communication engineer does not know anything about the Information one may succeed in transmitting and receiving. Is that the engineering ? It could never be the same world without the new strategies being created from the genius innovations from the active brains. If the engineer knows what the information is and how is that stored one might end up with a superior way of communicating the information. That is one could optimize it when it comes to power and efficiency. On other hand if engineer knows only about the Information, would not it be more better if he also knows how to make it accessible to the intended users ?

ICT | The Course

ICT engineering has courses in three technical dimension (TechD1,TechD2, TechD3). The course identifies the required core and optionals to be offered.

TechD1 Basics of electronics, Analog and Digital Electronics, Digital hardware, Digital Processors, Solid State Devices, VLSI, Architecture, DSP and inline advance courses.

TechD2 Structured and Object oriented languages, Data structures, Algorithms, Cryptography, Database Management, Operating Systems, Networking and other inline advanced courses.

TechD3 Signal and Systems, Basics of Communications, Analog and Digital Communications, RF and other inline courses.

The main vision behind ICT was to enhance the three dimensional (TechDs) integration for the substantial strength being provided to fix the distances between the technologies being developed even when being correlated.

Impacts Let me retrace the steps. Human child is born. He is made to cry to confirm he is alright. That is ICT. Automobile driver looks in GPS device and turns back to get to the right path. That is ICT. A defense personnel being away in dark and dense forests of enemy region and he contacts his base units. That is ICT. The family member is late and haven't reached home. What happened ? Call him or her on cellular device. That is ICT. You are reading this. This is ICT. So the impact of ICT in human life has been in every stretch of human scope. There is a piece of ICT in every second of Human day. We haven't reached the edge yet.

It is not branch to compete with IT, Communication and Electronics. Instead it is the Engineering branch that fills the voids being created between the engineering field due to the division of Engineering.
