Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE) is one of the most significant Christian theologians in the history of the church. His works shaped all of medieval theology and philosophy, helped inspire multiple reforms of the church, and continue to inform theological discussions today. This course is an introduction to his life and thought.

371-374: Studied law at Carthage
375: Conversion to Manicheaism
376-383: Taught rhetoric in Carthage
384: Professor of rhetoric in Milan
386: Converted to Christianity
387: Baptized and joined a monastic community in Thagaste
391: Ordained a priest in spite of his objections; founded a new community in Hippo
397: Consecrated Bishop of Hippo against his wishes
