Niccolò Machiavelli

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (3 May 1469 – 21 June 1527) was an Italian historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist, and writer based in Florence during the Renaissance. He was a founder of modern political science, and more specifically political ethics.[1]

[edit | edit source]The main primary text which will be used in this unit is The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is a political treatise, and follows the International Relations doctrine of Classical Realism. First published in c. 1516, The Prince has since become one of the foremost historical pieces on politics and statecraft during the Renaissance Period in Italy. The edition used in this unit is the Penguin edition (rev. ed. 2003) translated by George Bull.
