- Spread knowledge of evidence-based medicine
- Train students in scientific methodology in preventive health
- Help students to carry out scientific work in preventive health in their thesis
- Students are not only young people but all ages in bachelor's, master's, diploma and doctorate degrees
- Organize national conferences in the field of preventive health sciences
- Communicate the results in congresses, meetings and academic publications
- Assist in the development of a national preventive health research policy
- Collaborate with institutions with similar interests in Panama and internationally
Experiences of ongoing projects[edit | edit source]
The proposal is based on experiences with ongoing projects in Panama and other countries:
- Mental health and wellbeing in the maritime schools UMIP/ Panama and other countries[2]
- Workplace ergonomy (Port workers in Panama and Denmark [3]
- Screening for hypertension and Diabetes Type in the routine health examinations 2(ongoing in Panama, España, Dinamarca)[4]
- Courses in research methods (Panama)[5]
Contribution to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals[edit | edit source]
Goal 3: Good health and well-being for all workers
Goal 4: Quality education
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 10: Reduction of Inequity
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production (SOx and NOx emissions from ships)
Target 14: Observations of underwater life on compliance with good waste management
Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goals

Assistance to thesis for health students[edit | edit source]
SPESM's team of qualified researchers offers free supervision for SPESM members in any health education who wish to do their thesis based on one of the focused areas, mental health, ergonomics and early diagnosis of diabetes and hypertension through health examinations of routine. The methodological tutoring of the research is included. Standard study protocols are freely available. Previously collected data is also available. Examples of protocols:
- Mental health (studies at UMIP maritime schools in Panama and other countries)[11]
- Preventive ergonomics (study in port workers in Panama[12]
- Screening for Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes (studies in Panama, Spain, Denmark)[13]
- Educational program on research methods(Panama)[14]

As a researcher, you are increasingly encouraged to make your research data available and usable [15] . However, interviews with researchers revealed a reluctance to share data, including a lack of confidence in the usefulness of data [16]Data sharing is the desired default in the field of public health and a source of much ethical deliberation. Sharing data potentially contributes to the most efficient source of scientific data, but is fraught with contextual challenges that make stakeholders, particularly those in resource-poor contexts, hesitant or slow to share [17]
For example, the Global Body Mass Index (BMI) Mortality Collaborative1 published their work on BMI as a predictor of all-cause mortality. The researchers pooled individual participant data from 239 prospective studies, none of which originated in Latin America or Africa [18], [19]
The ethical standards for database research in the respective Universities and the ICOH Code of Ethics are complied with.
Confidentiality in the treatment of personal information is carried out in accordance with the regulations established by the National Data Protection Agencies. The European General Data Protection Regulation GDPR is complied with. All supervisors and students are required to familiarize themselves with the GDPR through a course. None of the research projects collect "personal data" as defined in the GDPR regulation and no sensitive personal information is included. All questionnaires ask for informed consent as the first question. The supervisors are concerned that the data is processed under the Medical Secrecy Law as a guide to good epidemiological practices. The anonymity of the participants will be protected in every way.
The Elsevier Guidelines for Editors include duties for editors, editors, reviewers and authors corresponding to the different types of internationally agreed duties. Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. Only those who have made substantial contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the article, e.g. language editing or medical writing should be acknowledged in the acknowledgments section.
The main decision-making authority of the center is the SPESM Board of Directors:
- The Board of Directors selects the President and Vice President and two members of SPESM for 1 year to be re-elected at the annual meeting of the Board in November of each year.
- Board meetings are held annually
- The President is responsible for convening Board meetings and presenting achievements annually.
The main financial resource for SPESM activity is the existing resources of individual participants and national and international research foundations.
The President is responsible for preparing an annual status report in December that is approved by the Board of Directors. The progress report should include a brief description of last year's results.
