Properties of insulators

From Wikiversity - Reading time: 1 min

Basic Concept[edit | edit source]

Insulators can simply stop the flow of current, this can be achieved by the lattice ions within the insultar reducing the drift velocity of the electron. This theory mainly applies to partial insulators, with insulators that stop the flow of current completly the lattice ions do not move entirly but the flow of electrons cease to flow through it. Insulators do not allow charge to transfer. This concept is the same with keeping an object warm or cool in which they cannot transfer energy through the material.

Types of Partial Insulators[edit | edit source]

  • Plastic
  • Fibre Glass
  • Wood

Note; If any object is givin a high enough electrical charge and high enough current it will always conduct, that is why these are called partial insulators since not all object are complete insulators.
