The Battle of Valmy was fought on 20 September 1792 between the French Revolutionary army and the Prussian army. 52,000 French troops fought to halt the advance of 34,000 Prussians on the capital Paris. The defeat of the Prussian troops forced their commander-in-chief, Brunswick to retreat to the fronteir. Had the French lost, the French Revolution would undoubtably have ended and the monarchy restored.
