Romney (Derivation: OE; possibly Rumen’s river) was a seaport in Kent, England, one of the five original Cinque Ports (with Dover, Hastings, Sandwich and Hythe), until the Great Storm of 1287 changed the topography so much that it found itself several miles inland and the River Rother had changed its outfall into the sea further down the coast. Romney had been the leader of the Cinque Ports. Its citizens shaded the monarch at his coronation and sat at his table at the coronation banquet. After the storm it sank into obscurity, and is now divided into New and Old Romney; New Romney being the more important of the two as it is a station on the sweet little Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a one third size locomotive and train that plies its tourist trade up and down the coast.
