BlackBerry is the name of a cellular smartphone, designed and formerly manufactured by BlackBerry Limited of Waterloo, Ontario. The BlackBerry company was started by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin under the name of Research In Motion, in 1984. For some time, they were a leading smartphone company.[1] However, when the iPhone was released in 2007, BlackBerry began to loose ground. Android also managed to take the lead on BlackBerry. After a delay, the BlackBerry 10 OS was released, in hopes of reversing their downward trend. They also released the PlayBook, which was a tablet designed to compete with the iPad. This venture was not successful, however, and the PlayBook was later discontinued. BlackBberry is still in business now, but they are little more than a minority producer now.[2]
