New Jersey is a state in the United States which is situated in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. North and east are surrounded by the state of New York; east and southeast are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean; west is bordered by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; southwest is bordered by Delaware Bay and the state of Delaware; and north and west are bordered by Pennsylvania. With a total size of 7,354 square miles (19,050 km2), New Jersey is the fifth-smallest state in terms of geographical area, but it is the 11th-most populous and the most densely inhabited, thanks to its almost 9.3 million people. The state capital of New Jersey is Trenton, while the city with the highest population in the state is Newark. With the exception of Warren County, all counties in the state are located inside the combined statistical areas of New York City or Philadelphia; as a result, the state's most populous metropolitan region is located within the Greater New York metropolitan area.
While New Jersey's pivotal position in the Northeast megalopolis drove its fast expansion and suburbanization in the second half of the twentieth century, the state's rapid growth and suburbanization in the first half of the twentieth century fueled its decline. A rapidly diversifying economy, whose main industries include biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, specialty agriculture, and information technology at the start of the twenty-first century. New Jersey, which has one of the most diverse populations in the United States, continues to be a popular immigration destination. As has been the case in previous decades, the state has progressively re-urbanized, with development in cities exceeding growth in the suburbs since 2008. As one of the richest states in the United States, with the second highest median household income in 2017, New Jersey is one of the most prosperous. Almost one-tenth of all families, or more than 323,000 out of a total population of 3.3 million, are millionaires, the highest proportion of millionaires per capita in the United States. New Jersey's public education system regularly ranks at or near the top of the list of the best in the United States.
