In Crimson Tide, Denzel Washington portrays an executive officer aboard a nuclear submarine during an international crisis. In a disagreement over orders to launch nuclear missiles against Russian base, Denzel's character (Gene Hackman) relieves the captain of command.
There are only two sides to a mutiny.
What makes the situation interesting, apart from the danger from enemy torpedoes and the prospect of starting a nuclear war, are the divergent viewpoints on which side is correct. From the captain's point of view, Denzel's character is a mutineer who has tricked the chief of the boat into going along with him. From Denzel's point of view, the captain's attempt to retake control of the ship (with the help of James Gandolfini's character), is a mutiny.
