Emergencies Act (Canada)

The Emergencies Act in Canada authorizes a tyrannical infringement on basic liberties and property at the whim of a government official, such as in quelling disagreement with him.^[1] It would be blatantly unconstitutional in the United States although that country has similar legislation in place.

In February 2022, Leftist dictator Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act to allow his jackboots in the Ottawa Police Service to smash the windows of peaceful truckers, and Trudeau regime officials to illegally seize their trucks and bank accounts. Under Canadian law, Parliament must ratify implementation of the Act within seven days; on the fourth day of debate, the Trudeau regime suspended Parliament, leaving the executive authority free to continue its abuse of power beyond seven days without parliamentary approval.^[2] A leftist bloc consisting of Trudeau's Liberal Party of Canada, the New Democratic Party led by Jagmeet Singh and a Green Party of Canada MP fully voted to ratify the Act one week later on February 21, with opposition from the Conservative Party of Canada, the Bloc Quebecois and another Green Party MP.^[3]

Expropriation of property[edit]

In February 2022 Canadian deputy dictator Chrystia Freeland announced an expansion of “terrorist financing” rules that would allow banks to freeze assets with no oversight. The new measures also apply to crowdfunding outlets and payment processing providers. “We are broadening the scope of Canada’s anti-money laundering and terrorist financing rules so that they cover crowdfunding platforms and the payment service providers they use,” Freeland said. The expanded rules also apply to digital assets, such as cryptocurrency. In enacting the changes, Freeland said that what she claimed were "illegal" blockades "...have highlighted the fact that crowdfunding platforms and some of the payment service providers they use are not fully captured under the proceeds of crime and terrorist financing act." All crowdfunding platforms and service providers were required to register with the Canadian government’s financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC, and report “large and suspicious transactions.”^[4]

The Trudeau regime and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began sending the names of those taking part in the Freedom Convoy protests to Canadian banks with orders to freeze the bank accounts.^[5] Freeland made clear that seizures of bank accounts and blacklisting by banks would become permanent.^[6]

Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti told CTV News that citizens identified as supporting US President Donald Trump are subject to “de-banking” as part of the Canadian government’s official target identification process. After equating the Trudeau order to the same principles around terrorism, the ‘Justice Minister’ said:

Trudeau's expropriation order caused a panic and a run on Canadian banks.^[8]

On February 23, 2022 (just two days after the vote to ratify the Emergencies Act), Trudeau reversed course unexpectedly as he revoked the Act, just one week after invoking it; speculation followed in news outlets that he ended his use of the Act because of the above-mentioned bank run^[8][9] and because it would have lost a vote in the Senate, resulting in the Act being terminated anyway.^[10] To save face, Trudeau claimed that "...(w)e are confident that existing laws and bylaws are now sufficient to keep people safe" and that his regime would continue supporting the Ottawa Police Service against the Freedom Convoy protesters; he also tried to distract from his responsibility for the chaos he caused by adding that "...we're fighting a virus, not each other", even though just days earlier, he fought the Canadian public by using police jackboots as his attack dogs against the Freedom Convoy protesters.^[11]
