From Britannica 11th Edition (1911)

Purser, the old name for the paymaster of the British and American navies still used in merchant vessels of to-day. In the British navy he was appointed by a warrant from the admiralty and was paid partly by salary and partly by a percentage (1 o%) on the value of unexpended stores.
