Mehlville, Missouri

Mehlville is an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) in South St. Louis County, Missouri. It had a population of 28,380 at the 2010 census.

History[edit]

Mehlville draws its name from the Mehlville post office, established in 1886. It was named in honor of Charles Mehl, a native of Germany who immigrated to Missouri in the 19th century and fought in the Mexican War. It has existed as a CDP since the 1980s.[1].

Geography[edit]

The Mehlville CDP is located between Interstate 55 and the Mississippi River in southern St. Louis County. It is roughly bisected from west to east by Interstate 255; other major highways include U.S. Route 61 and Missouri State Highway 231 (locally known as Telegraph Road). Its official coordinates are 38°30′15″N 90°18′46″W.

The community has a total area of 7.60 square miles, and an average elevation of 607 feet.[2]

Demographics[edit]

At the 2010 census, Mehlville had a total of 28,380 inhabitants, grouped into 12,858 households, with a population density of 3,736.2 people per square mile. This figure represented a slight decrease from the 2000 census, when Mehlville had a population of 28,822. 92.41% of the inhabitants were White, 3.02% were African-American, 0.16% were Native American, 2.07% were Asian, 0.04% were Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.74% were from some other race, and 1.56% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 2.91% of the population.

The median age in Mehlville was 42 years, with 19.0% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 9.1% between 18 and 24 years old, 25.8% between 25 and 44, 27.4% between 45 and 64, and 18.7% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 47.5% male, 52.5% female.[3]

According to the 2018 American Community Survey, Mehlville had a median household income of $56,461, and a median family income of $67,458. The unemployment rate was 2.8%. The per capita income was $32,645. About 7.7% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 years of age or older.[4]

Education[edit]

The Mehlville area, along with most of unincorporated south St. Louis County, is part of the Mehlville R-IX School District, formed in 1930 through the consolidation of several smaller districts. The community itself is served by Mehlville High School, one of two in the district. It has an enrollment of just over 1,500 students in grades 9-12; the mascot is the Panthers, and the school colors are green, white, and black.[5]
