Texas A&M University is the flagship university of the Texas A&M University System. Located in College Station, Texas, it was established in 1871 (or 1876 depending on the source used, the latter being the first year classes were held) as an agricultural & vocational school[2] with an emphasis on military training, but has become a respected university with a broad range of offerings (notable among them is the only veterinary program in the state).
A&M has many rich traditions, and also is one of very few moderate, or possibly even conservative, institutions of higher learning (likely due to its rich military history; Texas A&M is one of six designated Senior Military Colleges and produces more officers for the United States Armed Forces outside of the military academies).
The school's athletic programs are associated with the NCAA's Southeastern Conference, and its mascot is the Aggie.
