From Wikitia OpenCerts,[1] is a part of the Smart Nation initiative of Singapore. Built upon the OpenAttestation[2] standard, that relies on Ethereum Blockchain, it is a fully decentralized platform[3]. Following the same principles as Verifiable Credentials, it is however not compatible with that standard.
OpenCerts was born in November 2017[4] when Ngee Ann Polytechnic approached Govtech to build digital certificates. The first version of OpenCerts has been released in 2018. Initially some parts of the platform were not decentralized:
Those limitations were limiting the number of universities that could be onboarded.
The release of the second version of OpenCerts in 2020 allowed the platform to transform into a full decentralized platform by allowing any institution to prove their identity and display certificate without relying on Govtech or SSG.
