Scottish Lowlands

The Scottish Lowlands are a region of south and central Scotland. The vast majority of Scotland's population inhabits this region which comprises the non-Highland parts of the country. Areas included within the Lowlands are Strathmore, Fife, the Scottish Rift Valley and the Southern Uplands and Borders.

The term refers to the comparatively lower latitudes of the region rather than to its topography; although the Highlands are considerably more mountainous, the Lowlands are far from flat. However a few authorities do place the Northern, but flat county of Caithness in the Lowlands.
