In this photo a miner has scooped up a pan of sediment where he believes gold has been concentrated in an alluvial deposit.

An alluvial deposit is created when the erosion of rocks, by water, concentrates a fraction of the original rock, in downstream sandbanks.

The erosion of small inclusions of Gold, and subsequent deposit in sandbanks, is a well-known instance of an alluvial deposit, due to the higher density of the grains of gold dust.
