United Way

The United Way of America is a national charity organization headquartered in Virginia and has thousands of chapters nationwide. Also, the group is now active in 45 countries under the name United Way Worldwide. Per their website, "We envision a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives." In 2007, the group reported $4.2 billion in donations. United Way began as Charity Organizations Society in 1887 out of Denver, Colorado.

Scandals[edit]

In 1992, President William Aramony resigns and is indicted for fraud and mismanagement of funds. He was convicted on 25 counts of fraud, filing false tax returns, conspiracy, money laundering and sentenced to seven years in prison.[1] In 2004, CEO of the Washington, D.C. chapter, Oral Suer, was convicted of misuse of donations.

In 2008, local United Ways distributed an estimated $1.9 million to Planned Parenthood agencies.[2] It was reported in 2016 that affiliates donate $3 million per year to Planned Parenthood.[3]
