Synthesis

Synthesis is by reaction of pure substances in an inert atmosphere at 450–800 °C:

Or by passing hydrogen sulfide through heated ytterbium(III) oxide

Physical properties

Ytterbium trisulfide forms yellow crystals of rhombic symmetry, and cell parameters a = 0.678 nm, b = 0.995 nm, c = 0.361 nm.[2]

Uses

The compound is used in the production of ceramics and as a catalyst.[3]
