Lachish was one of the strongest fortresses in Judah of ancient Israel. For that reason, the word means "impregnable" today.
Lachish had been a royal Canaanitish city, located in the Shephelah, a plain of Palestine.[1] The Israelites captured and destroyed it,[2] and then built their fortress. It was eventually overtaken by Sennacherib,[3] as recounted on slabs now held in the British Museum.
