Tom Clancy

Tom Clancy(April 12, 1947 – October 1, 2013) is a military-thriller and near-future sci-fi, action, and realistic fiction novel writer. His best known works include the Jack Ryan novels and Tom Clancy's Net Force.

He is known for his conservative political beliefs, and is also a part owner of the Baltimore Orioles.^[1]

Books by Tom Clancy[edit]

• The Hunt For Red October (1984) - introduces Jack Ryan as a CIA analyst who gets caught up in the biggest field operation in decades when a highly respected Soviet navy sub captain decides to defect. The obvious benefits of capitalism as opposed to corruption and inefficiency of communism are major theme.
• Red Storm Rising (1986) - fiction about World War III. Does not include Jack Ryan.
• Patriot Games (1987) - the back story of Jack Ryan, former marine lieutenant who stops a terrorist kidnapping in London, and is then himself targeted by the terrorists. The story has recurring reflections on how terrorism can be most effectively dealt with by international military and political cooperation, not to mention exposes the liberal folly of regarding terrorist as legitimate soldiers in an ideological conflict as opposed to criminals who have abrogated the civil rights of others who should be dealt with as criminals.
• Cardinal of the Kremlin (1988) - "Cardinal" is a spy passing Soviet secrets to the US. Partly set in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation.
• Clear and Present Danger (1989) - Central America and drugs are the focus - distrust of reporters and politicians is a theme.
• The Sum of All Fears (1991) - Israel loses a nuke, which is then used by terrorists on an American city. While the main villains are the terrorists, the secondary villains are the liberal presidential administration that seeks to marginalize the US military and foolishly ignores the advice of the more level headed (i.e. - conservative) officials who counsel caution despite the "end" of the Cold War and nearly cause disaster yet again due to their foolish political decisions.
• Without Remorse (1993) - Details the origin of the character John Clark, and is set during the Vietnam War. The book also contains many themes addressing the ruthlessness and brutality involved in the domestic illegal drug trade.
• Debt of Honor (1994) - what if Japan invaded a US island? (ends with a 9/11 style attack on the US Capitol).
• Executive Orders (1996) - continues where Debt of Honor left off, with Jack Ryan bumped up to President of the United States, just in time to deal with a new threat in the Middle East. It also features many corrupt liberals as enemies, who oppose the new conservative government, and who use many extralegal means throughout the book to topple the new President's conservative reforms. Further, the book addresses how liberals have corrupted the US tax code to their own benefit and how similar corruption in the American legislature allowed abortion to become federally protected.
• SSN (1996) - based on a video game. Set on the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Cheyenne during a war with China.
• Rainbow Six (1998) - John Clark leads an elite counter-terrorist group - biggest challenge is global eco-terrorists. The book also contains strong themes reinforcing the need for nations to act decisively and cooperatively in a military sense when dealing with terrorism, as well as the danger of allowing unchecked power by corporations acting as if they were nation states.
• The Bear and the Dragon (2001) - "Bear" is Russia, "Dragon" is China, details a fictional conflict between the two involving the Russians discovering massive amounts of oil and gold at a time when the Chinese economy is at a nadir, so they invade Russia to obtain both, but America decides to intervene on behalf of the Russians.
• Red Rabbit (2002) - a Soviet defector seeks to prevent the assassination of the Pope.
• The Teeth of the Tiger (2003) - Set several years after The Bear And The Dragon, features Jack Ryan's son as one of the main protagonists. The heroes are an "off the books" intelligence agency devoted to decisively dealing with terrorism due to the inability of official organizations to do so due to incompetence of a liberal presidential administration in America.
• Dead or Alive (2010) - Continues the story of The Teeth of the Tiger, while featuring return appearances from many regulars, including Jack Ryan Sr, and John Clark. Continues to show the inefficiencies of a liberal run America to conduct foreign policy properly and shows the deleterious effects of liberalism paralyzing military forces from taking peremptory action against terrorists.
• Against All Enemies (2011) - Ex-SEAL and CIA operative Maxwell Moore is on the hunt for terrorists from Afghanistan, and discovers, after joining a special task force, that they're being aided by a powerful Mexican drug lord.
• Locked On (2011) - While Jack Ryan Sr leads the hunt for Islamic terrorists, his father runs a campaign for re-election, while John Clark finds himself on the run when accused of murder. Features many corrupt liberals as enemies who collude with terrorists and other rogue elements to prevent Jack Ryan from reconstituting a conservative government in America.
