3 John is a General Epistle, directed at the entire Christian community, but most specifically, converted gentiles. Like 2 John, it is only one chapter.

Chapter 1[edit]

Verse King James Version Proposed Conservative Translation Analysis
1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. The Bishop, to the beloved Gaius, who I love truly. πρεσβυτερος meaning elder or leader, which among the early Church would become Bishop. αληθεια does not mean, "fellow Christian," as might be thought from KJV, but "objectively" or "truly."
2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. Beloved, I wish more than anything that you will be prosperous and healthy, just as your soul has prospered.
3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I was so happy to learn from our fellow Christians that you had learned the truth, and converted.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Nothing makes me happier than hearing that my parishioners know the truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; Beloved, you do faithfully anything you do to both your brothers and to strangers,
6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: which has demonstrated your charity to the Church: you do right by all who you bring closer to God.
7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. For his name, they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. Therefore, we should receive the Gentiles, that we might also be volunteers to the truth.
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. I wrote to the Church, but Diotrephes, who is an elitist, doesn't read my letters.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth [them] out of the church. Which is why I will remember his hostility, how he attacked us, and not content with that, how he ignored his brothers, and banned all he could from the Church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. Beloved, don't follow what is evil, but rather follow what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.
12 Demetrius hath good report of all [men], and of the truth itself: yea, and we [also] bear record; and ye know that our record is true. Demetrius has good knowledge of all mean, and of the truth. We acknowledge this, and you know our testimony is true.
13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: I have much to say, but I will not write them with ink and pen.
14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace [be] to thee. [Our] friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name. Be assured I will come to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face. Peace be with you, and our friends salute you. Greet them by name.
