Many riveting performances in blockbuster movies which were also critically acclaimed, including Jaws, The Sting, and A Man for All Seasons, yet only one Oscar nomination and no award. He was an accomplished novelist, publishing The Hiding Place (1960) and The Sun Doctor (1961), which won the Hawthornden Prize in 1962.
