At 2,304,580 people, Houston is the most populated city in Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States, as well as the most populous city in the Southern United States and the sixth-most populous city in North America, according to the United States Census Bureau. It is the county seat of Harris County and the primary city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, which is the fifth-most populated metropolitan statistical area in the United States. It is located in Southeast Texas between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. In the southeast corner of the wider megaregion known as the Texas Triangle, Houston serves as the anchor city.

In terms of land size, Houston is the ninth-largest city in the United States, with a total area of 637.4 square miles (1,651 km2), making it the ninth-most populous (including consolidated city-counties). Although it is the biggest city in the United States by total area, its government is not combined with the government of a county, parish, or borough like its counterparts in other countries. Despite the fact that the city is predominantly located in Harris County, tiny sections of the city stretch into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, neighbouring other major municipalities in the Greater Houston area such as Sugar Land and The Woodlands, respectively.

At the junction of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou (today known as Allen's Landing), the city of Houston was established on August 30, 1836, by land speculators. It was chartered as a city on June 5, 1837, and became the state capital of Texas in 1839. The city is named after former General Sam Houston, who served as President of the Republic of Texas and was victorious in the Battle of San Jacinto, which took place 25 miles (40 kilometres) east of Allen's Landing and resulted in the independence of Texas from Mexico. The city of Houston developed slowly as a regional commerce hub during the nineteenth century after temporarily acting as the state capital of Texas in the late 1830s. Houston is the state capital of Texas.

Houston, also known as the "Bayou Metropolis," "Space City," "H-Town," and "the 713," has grown into a worldwide city with strengths in culture, medicine, and research, among other things. The city boasts a diverse population of people from different ethnic and religious origins, as well as a significant and rising foreign community. Houston is the most varied metropolitan region in Texas, and it has been dubbed the most racially and ethnically diverse large city in the United States. It is also the most diversified metropolitan area in the world. The Museum District is home to several cultural organisations and exhibitions, which draw more than seven million people every year to the area. The Museum District is comprised of nineteen museums, galleries, and community spaces, all of which are free to the public. The Theater District in Houston is home to a thriving visual and performing arts environment, as well as resident companies in all major performing arts disciplines throughout the year.
