1.In your opinion, the 2008 election that concluded on Tuesday is most similar to which election in history, and why? I think that though the election of 2008 was similar to Jackson’s election in 1829 because of the corrupt bargains, but I think it was also similar to the Lincoln-Douglas election because Lincoln had to disguise himself on the way to his inauguration because there were so many people in the South who wanted to kill him if he won and now Obama and his family are being threatened.
2.Imperialism: a good or bad thing? I think that imperialism has its positives and negatives. It can be used irresponsibly and illegitimately and the country’s only excuse is ‘because we can’ but it also can be a positive thing. If a big country is picking on a smaller, less powerful country, a larger country’s duty is to step in and ‘speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves’ (Proverbs 31:8-9) like we did for Cuba and the Philippines.
3.Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please. One thing that stuck out to me in the list of the progressive movement’s goals was ‘anti-war’. Although this sounds good, I don’t think that it can be practical for a big government like America. We had to fight for our freedom and independence- it wasn’t just handed to us! And sometimes we had to stick up for countries that were being ‘picked on’ and our friends. God led the Israelites into war in His name. Being ‘anti-war’ doesn’t solve much of anything and leaves the country vulnerable and disjointed.
4.Please explain the cartoon in the Minnesota Tribune, having the caption at top, "WHAT WILL HE DO!" and the caption at the bottom, "The eyes of the world are upon him." Include your description of the point of view of the cartoonist. In the picture, McKinley is drawn holding a Filipino child in his hand near a cliff. I believe that the cartoonist believed that McKinley would give the Philippines back to Spain’s control (the abyss) because McKinley is shown going towards the cliff- not away from it.
