The former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, now officially the Republic of North Macedonia, is a landlocked country on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe, bordered by Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east.
It was admitted to the United Nations in 1993 with the provisional name of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (officially abbreviated to fYRoM or tfYRoM, usually written FYROM), pending resolution of a naming dispute with Greece, which has an adjoining province also called 'Macedonia' (Greek: Μακεδονία). The proposal of the name Republic of North Macedonia, and was ratified in 2019.
