Phenol (or carbolic acid) is an organic compound with the molecular formula C6H5OH. It is toxic and irritant.[1] It was formerly obtained from coal tar but is now produced from petroleum. Phenol is an important industrial chemical and is a precursor for many products including dyes, explosives, lubricants, pesticides, plastics and resins. [2]
