Ashli Babbitt (October 10, 1985 – January 6, 2021) was a 14-year veteran who served four tours in Afghanistan with the US Air Force and was a security forces airman who achieved the rank of senior airman (E-4).[2] Ashli was unarmed when she apparently was murdered by Michael Byrd, a U.S. Capitol Police officer, during a Joint Session of the U.S. Congress to certify the fraudulent results of the 2020 presidential election.[3] The D.C. coroner listed the cause of death as a “homicide.”[4]
During the 1/6 Capitol protests, as protesters rallied in support of President Trump outside the capitol, chartered vans of Antifa were escorted by state police in black, unmarked SUVs into the midst of the crowd.[5][6][7] Capitol Police then removed barriers and waved the crowd onto the Capitol steps.[8][9] Antifa rioters proceeded to wreak havoc[10] breaking windows on the U.S. Capitol building and storming the premises.[11][12][13][14] Police stood aside and allowed the Capitol breach while Patriot protesters begged the police to stop it and call for back up.[15] Patriots attempted to stop the provocateurs.[16][17] Capitol Police opened the doors and stood aside while inviting people inside.[18][19]
The proceedings inside the House and Senate chambers were halted and Babbitt, who entered the building with the crowd, was shot dead by a government agent outside the Speakers Gallery.[20][21][22]
Video analysis shows Babbitt was attempting to diffuse the situations between protesters leading to the Speaker’s Lobby and the police. Babbitt even went so far as to step between one of the men around her and the police, before being executed on government property.
Videos show's Babbitt trying to stop others from breaking through the doors.[23] Babbitt was so upset about the escalating attack on the Speaker’s Lobby, she grabbed one of the primary rioters and punched him in the face seconds before she climbed through a broken window attempting to move away from the crowd. For several minutes before she was shot, Babbitt implored the rioters to stop vandalizing the Capitol. She shouted at police guarding the double doors to call for backup, according to an analysis of footage shot by three cameramen. A video shows rioter Zachary J. Alam repeatedly smashing the glass in one of the doors and the window to the right side of the doors. He used a black riot helmet as a cudgel. As Alam pounded on the glass in the right door, Babbitt shouted, “Stop it!” The entire pane of glass then fell forward into the Speaker’s Lobby. Alam then turned attention to the side window and pounded until it, too, fell into the lobby, the video shows. Babbitt then stepped toward the corner, grabbed Alam’s backpack, and delivered a left hook to his nose, knocking his glasses off, the video shows. As Alam fumbled to put his glasses back on, Babbitt climbed into the window, where she was shot by U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd. She fell backward to the floor, mortally wounded.[24]
“The reality of it is, Ashli wasn’t a violent person. She was a good person, but [the media] have demonized her to become this domestic terrorist that she never has been. She served her country for 14 years. That’s just insane to me that they can actually get away with pushing this narrative,” said Tayler Hansen, a journalist who was next to Babbitt when she was murdered, “They’ve done that by suppressing first-hand witnesses like me.” Hansen said that he was right behind Babbitt in a hallway on the second floor of the Capitol around 2:40 PM Jan. 6th. He followed her as she turned down a random hallway, that just so happened to lead to the Speaker’s Lobby. “People just kind of emerged on the door. By that time, she was stuck in the corner. She was literally trapped there.” Hansen said.
“About five minutes prior to her getting shot and killed, all of those officers, Officer Yetter and the other officers in the hall, the MPD cops, they were all joking with her and laughing with her,” Hansen said. “They were having conversations and joking and laughing. Then not even five minutes later, Michael Byrd comes and executes her.”
Aaron Babbitt, Ashli's husband said of the footage: “After repeatedly forcing myself to watch the murder of my wife, I have come to my own conclusion that Ashli came to a point of realization that she was in very bad situation and the police weren’t acting appropriately to what she was witnessing. I know my wife very well. She’s not destructive. She was not there to hurt anybody.”
In July 2021, 7 months after the fatal shooting, Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd was finally identified as the gunman who used excessive force against unarmed woman.[26] A veteran Capitol Police officer said his colleague was not following department firearms training, which requires officers to keep their weapons pointed in a safe direction while making sure of what’s in front of and beyond a target, and to keep the finger off the trigger until ready to fire. “His trigger finger shouldn’t be inside the trigger guard and the gun shouldn’t be pointed at other officers. He’s even pointing it in the direction of a member of Congress,” the fellow officer said, referring to Rep. Markwayne Mullin. A lawyer for the Babbitt family said, “I can’t tell you how many officers have contacted me to say that what that guy did doesn’t pass muster. No one has come forward to say this was justified homicide, not even the Justice Department. The way he did it — hiding in a room and then popping out and firing — is a problem. If his objective was to stop her, he didn’t need to shoot."[27]
Following the violence, one protester posted in social media a statement that he had been paid to disrupt the Trump rally and Congressional proceedings.[28] The Capitol Police chief resigned.[29]
Facebook allowed leftists to dishonor and deface Babbitt's Facebook page with disgusting and vile posts celebrating Babbitt's murder, while Facebook, in violation of the First Amendment, illegally banned conservative news site Information Liberation's Facebook page for 30 days (under a false claim of "violation" of community standards - i.e. saying something Facebook employees did not like) for speaking out about her killing and criticizing the events which led to it.
Byrd, who once left his loaded gun in a Capitol bathroom unattended while a group of school kids were touring the Capitol, played the victim[30][31]was hailed as and was hailed as a hero by leftist media.[32]
