2. What I find most inspiring about Christopher Columbus is his drive and motivation to follow his dreams and work as hard as he could to achieve them, even from a very young age.

3. Some of the first settlements might’ve failed because of the hostility with the American Indians, illness and disease, and other hardships that come along with settling an uncivilized country.

4. The motivation for the first settlements in Massachusetts was the freedom to establish a religious community based on the settlers personal beliefs. The Pilgrims did so to establish an untainted community, free of the Church of England, while the mainstream Puritans only believed that the church had to be cleansed from within, not requiring them to abandon it completely.

5. William Penn was outstanding because he came up with the idea of religious freedom for all. He was also very kind to the Indians and founded the city that was to become America’s greatest: Philadelphia.

6. The four types of colonies are as follows: A. Joint-Stock Colony: a colony, such as Virginia, that was funded by investors through a joint-stock company. B. Proprietary Colony: a colony in the possession and under government of one or more persons. An example would be Pennsylvania. C. Charter Colony: a colony instituted on land donated by the king to a person or company who governed by it. Connecticut was a Charter Colony. D. Royal Colony: a colony that had been repossessed by the king and ruled by an appointed governor, an exampled of which would be Virginia.

7. The Puritans did have the right to be strict in their community because a religion cannot be founded and a society cannot be maintained without rules. They also had every right to expel people who did not follow these rules because they had left England for the specific reason of nurturing their personal beliefs and remaining pure of other things they deemed unwholesome. A person who did not agree with them would not have been entirely comfortable living in a place where everyone was against him anyway. However, while the Puritans had a right to expel, they did not have a right to execute the nonbelievers, because only God should have the power and only He has the authority, to give and take life.

H1. A colony based on a particular religion or religious ideal might encounter a problem such as being seized. If the religious belief was against violent then they would have virtually no way to fight back that their opposition would acknowledge, particularly if this enemy were the uneducated Indians. It could thrive, if left alone, because a society based off a religion such as Christianity would be the ideal place for all good Christian people to live. An example of a religious community that thrived would be the Puritans sent by the Massachusetts Bay Company to Salem, Massachusetts.

H4. Mercantilism can be briefly described as a system in which a mother country restricts imports and maximizes exports. The mother country would import raw materials from its colony, and would then produce finished products at minimal cost. Then they would sell the products to other countries it traded with, and even back to the original colony. My view of mercantilism is that it was essentially a very good idea, created by someone who had a head for good business and knew how to make money. However, to me the mother country is exploiting the colony by taking the raw materials for so little and then selling the finished product for a good percentage more.

H5. “Triangular Trade”, as it is called, did not actually exist. For while slaves traveled to the Americas and goods back to Europe, there was nothing for the owner to put back on the ship on its way to West Africa except a small amount of supplies, and maybe gold to purchase the slaves with. Since the trade didn’t travel to all three destinations, only two, triangular trade is more of a convenient way to teach the system our ancestors used as opposed to an actual trading circuit. However, a triangular trade route did exist since that was the way the trade ships traversed the sea from continent to continent.
