The United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit is an intermediate federal appellate court based in Boston, Massachusetts. It hears appeals from federal district courts in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, and Rhode Island. Notable former judges who sat on the court include Stephen Breyer and David Souter, both of whom were subsequently elevated to the Supreme Court. The First Circuit has fewer judgeships than any other U.S. court of appeals.
