New York is a state located in the northeastern region of the United States of America. It was one of the original thirteen colonies that went on to become the United States of America. New York is the 27th most populous state in the United States, with a total land area of 54,556 square miles (141,300 km2). As of 2020, it will have a population of more than 20 million people, ranking it as the fourth most populous state in the United States. The state is bordered on the south by New Jersey and Pennsylvania, on the east by Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont; it shares a maritime border with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, and on the north by the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario; and it shares an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario, to the northwest. It is referred to as New York State in order to differentiate it from New York Metropolis, which is the state's biggest city.

New York Metropolis will have a population of 8,804,190 people in 2020, making it the most populated city in the United States. The New York metropolitan region, which is one of the most populated in the world, is home to two-thirds of the state's total population. Known as the "cultural, financial, and media centre of the world," New York Metropolis is also the world's most economically powerful city. It is home to the United Nations Headquarters and has been dubbed "the world's most powerful city." In addition to Albany, the state's other four most populated cities are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, with Buffalo serving as its capital.

Geographically, New York is very varied. South Carolina's southernmost region, which is located along the Atlantic coastal plain, contains Long Island and numerous other adjacent islands, as well as New York City and the lower Hudson River Valley. As part of the broader Upstate New York area, there are numerous ranges of the larger Appalachian Mountains, as well as the Adirondack Mountains, which are located in the state's northeastern lobe. These more hilly areas are divided by the Hudson River Valley, which runs north–south and east–west, and the Mohawk River Valley, which runs east–west. As a part of the Great Lakes area, Western New York borders the lakes of Ontario and Erie, as well as the majestic Niagara Falls and the Niagara River Gorge. The Finger Lakes, which are a popular vacation and tourist destination in the state's centre region, dominate the state's core region.
