The maxim pursuit of happiness, a key phrase in the U.S. Declaration of Independence, "was penned in direct reference to the words of English philosopher John Locke, who in his 1690 essay, Concerning Human Understanding wrote, 'the necessity of pursuing happiness [is] the foundation of liberty.'[1]
