Mission[edit]

The mission statement of the Texas Education Agency reads:^[1]

The Texas Education Agency will improve outcomes for all public school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.^[2]

Superintendent[edit]

The current Texas Commissioner of Education is Mike Morath (nonpartisan). Morath assumed office in 2016.

State Board of Education[edit]

The State Board of Education consists of 15 members elected by geographic district to four-year terms. The Governor and Texas State Senate select one member to serve as chairperson for a two-year term. The Commissioner of Education serves as the board's executive officer and works with the board in developing curriculum, public and charter school policies and continuing education programs.^[3]
