Edgar b.1074, was the eldest surviving son of
Malcolm III and became king of
Scotland following the death of his father and elder brother at
Alnwick then the murder of his half-brother,
Duncan II. Edgar had a remarkably peaceful reign, but also had to make the difficult choice of ceding control of the
Hebrides to the king of
Norway. Edgar was also close friends with the English king,
William II who had helped him obtain the throne. Edgar's sister, Matilda, married
Henry I of England.
